Why you react the way you do under stress?

Someone said something. You saw something. You remembered something and suddenly you're feeling something.

But we often mix up our feelings with out Nervous system Reactions.

Your nervous system is a physical reaction. When that something feels (consciously or subconsciously) threatening to you in some way, your brain sends signals to your body to react. How does it react?

You know - it's the classic Fight or Flight.

Maybe you snap in fury. Maybe you start cleaning, planning, and fixing. You leave or ghost. Maybe you go frozen and blank stare. Or maybe you smile, say "it's fine," and give in because you can't take the hassle of fighting for what you need or want. Maybe you collapse in exhaustion.

These reactions mean your nervous system is doing its job and trying to keep you safe. It just might be using an old strategy for a new situation.

Did you know? Your nervous system has a "go-to" move.

When your brain senses a threat, whether that's a charging bear or a school assignment was due a week ago and you forgot, or the person you like stopped talking to you - your body shifts into protection mode before your thinking brain gets a chance to weigh in. Your heart rate changes, your muscles get ready, and your focus narrows.

Everyone has access to the full range of stress responses. But most of us lean toward one or two favorites, usually the ones that helped us as we were growing up.

If in your household everyone yelled and fought (fight), that may be your go-to. If you saw people leave all the time (flight), or get stuck in decision making (freeze), or people please (fawn), or huddled alone in a dark room and sleeping (faint), you may have picked up on those traits.

Over time, that go-to reaction starts to feel like "just who I am."

That's what we call your nervous system personality. It isn't a diagnosis or a permanent label. It's a pattern, and patterns can change once you can see them.

The five nervous system personalities

(Fight)When stress hits, you move toward it. You get sharp, direct, and ready to take charge. At your best, you're the person who speaks up and gets things done. When you're overloaded, you snap, argue, or feel irritation flood in faster than you can catch it.

(Flight)You handle stress by staying in motion: planning, fixing, working late, reorganizing the garage at 11 p.m. Many highly responsible people live here. At your best, you're capable and dependable. When you're overloaded, you can't sit still, can't sleep, and feel guilty resting.

(Freeze)When things get to be too much, your system hits the brakes. You go quiet, feel foggy or numb, or stare at the to-do list without starting. At your best, you're calm in a crisis and good at observing. When you're overloaded, you feel stuck and far away from yourself.

(Fawn)You handle stress by tending to everyone else's feelings. You smooth things over, say yes, and keep the peace. At your best, you're deeply attuned and caring. When you're overloaded, you lose track of what you need, and resentment builds quietly

.

Recognize yourself in more than one? That's normal. Many people have a primary style and a backup that shows up when the first one stops working.

Your results provide a solid foundation. Check out this video where I review nervous system and how we can begin to soothe ourselves. This helps us transition more swiftly from the reactive part of our brain to the thinking brain, allowing us to think our way through situations instead of reacting or overreacting.
